Background of the Study
Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, are a significant concern in the care of elderly individuals, particularly those with limited mobility or chronic illnesses. The occurrence of pressure ulcers is commonly linked to prolonged pressure on specific body parts, leading to tissue damage. Older adults, especially those with conditions such as diabetes, dementia, and neurological impairments, are at a higher risk of developing these ulcers (Ibrahim & Mohammed, 2024). In Kano State, where healthcare access may be limited and nursing education resources can vary, the knowledge and practices of nurses regarding pressure ulcer prevention are critical to the overall care of elderly patients.
Effective prevention of pressure ulcers is a core aspect of nursing care. Nurses play a pivotal role in assessing risk factors, implementing preventive measures, and providing appropriate interventions to manage and treat these ulcers (Usman et al., 2023). However, there has been limited research on the specific level of knowledge that nurses in Kano State possess regarding pressure ulcer prevention. This study seeks to evaluate the knowledge of nurses in Kano State on the prevention of pressure ulcers among the elderly and to identify gaps in their knowledge and practice.
Statement of the Problem
Pressure ulcers are a significant health issue among the elderly in Kano State, and inadequate knowledge about their prevention can lead to poor outcomes for elderly patients. Despite the importance of pressure ulcer prevention in nursing practice, there is limited evidence on the current knowledge and practices of nurses regarding the prevention of pressure ulcers among elderly individuals in Kano State. This study aims to evaluate the extent of nurses' knowledge and their ability to effectively prevent pressure ulcers in elderly patients.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the knowledge of nurses regarding pressure ulcer prevention among elderly patients in Kano State.
To identify the key factors influencing the knowledge and practices of nurses in pressure ulcer prevention.
To evaluate the relationship between nurses' knowledge of pressure ulcer prevention and the incidence of pressure ulcers among elderly patients in Kano State.
Research Questions
What is the level of knowledge among nurses regarding pressure ulcer prevention among elderly patients in Kano State?
What factors influence nurses' knowledge and practice of pressure ulcer prevention in Kano State?
How does the knowledge of nurses regarding pressure ulcer prevention correlate with the incidence of pressure ulcers in elderly patients in Kano State?
Research Hypotheses
Nurses with higher levels of knowledge on pressure ulcer prevention are less likely to have elderly patients who develop pressure ulcers.
Factors such as education, experience, and training positively influence nurses' knowledge and practice of pressure ulcer prevention.
There is a significant difference in the knowledge levels of nurses based on their years of experience in nursing.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in healthcare facilities in Kano State, specifically those who are involved in elderly patient care. Limitations include the potential bias in self-reported knowledge and the variability in training programs across different healthcare facilities.
